perfect for portability and kids
we bought this dvd player for our baby while he was hospitalized. we have had no problems with it. works great. while other reviewers complain about resolution, initial start-up noise, etc, we have no complaints. since the player was purchased with children in mind, these are no issues to us. i personally don’t find the start-up noise that loud. the same as any other dvd player starting. my 16yr old (high-tech teen) thinks the resolution is fine. of course it’s not HD, but perfect for excellent quality video viewing. we are extremely happy with this player. it is well built. we would buy another in a heartbeat if needed!! buy with confidence that your getting a great player.

Best DVD player for the money
I did a lot of research before making this purchase. For the money, this is the best! I bought mine on sale for just over 0. It is very sturdy, and nice looking. More importantly, the screen image is sharp and clear. It also has very loud speakers- a feature that many other DVD players in higher price ranges don’t. I wanted something with a longer battery life, but to get more than 4 hours, it is very pricey. This one tested out at 3.75 hours. The recharge time is somewhere around 5 hours. I have found that the battery life has been more than I’ve needed for my toddler on plane trips. I was concerned about the screen size (bigger is better, right?) but really, since my toddler is watching it at less than 3 feet, its great. This is a very user friendly device. Easy to start right away, and easy to plug into a tv to watch videos. This is great when we are staying at hotels. I also bought a pair of califone headphones (about ), which my toddler LOVES. I would highly recommend these for parents traveling with children.

I have no complaints, I have used this in the car, in the air, and at home. There is a somewhat “loud” whirring upon startup, but really not enough to worry over. I would recommend this to family and friends!

Philips PET724 not working
It is very sad to see that after just three and four usage of the DVD player. It has stopped working. I have charged the battery but nothing is comming on the screen. It is dead. I have gone through all the manual and nothing is mentioned there also

I have been dupped.

Does What it says on the box
Well priced product with good spec.
No reliability problems, looks good and works well.
I bought the US version whilst on a trip to New York, saving 50% of the UK price and the spec is better than the UK version (which doesnt play DivX althought the Euro one does)
It is easy to make it region free ( do an online search for a crack) and it is switchable PAL / NTSC so I can play any disc on it and also hook it up to most TVs.

Sound is good with headphones and fairly loud from the speakers if a bit tinny.

Very portable, and handy to have in the car when the blackwall tunnel closes and you can’t get home.

Portable DVD - Philips PET724 7″
This is the first portable DVD player I’ve owned or used. Have enjoyed its use. However, I find that the sound quality isn’t great; in particular the volume at its maximum isn’t terribly loud. Soft dialogue is sometimes hard to hear. Would recommend ear phones.

good choice!
the product arrived as promised from the seller, in good condition and on time. the screen is a nice size. i gave this as a gift and the recipient, an 18 year old girl, absolutely loves it. we have friends who looked at it and have decided to purchase it as well. it was a great choice!

Neat idea, poorly executed
Tried it, didn’t like it. It’s speakers are not powerful enough. The plastic of the disc door and tray are too flimsy. The curved shape of the case makes it nearly impossible to use the (also flimsy) stand. The unit gets too hot, it would be uncomfortable in your lap. The remote doesn’t work more than a few feet from it and then only when you’re facing straight to it. All in all, it’s a neat idea just not very well executed.

Solid system
This is a solid system for watching DVDs and iPod videos. Haven’t tried the SD card yet, but the quality for DVDs and the iPod is excellent.
The only problem I had was using the controls on the system itself for fast forwarding iPod video. They were pretty clunky. However, if you use the remote control, there is no issue. All in all, it is well worth the money for people who enjoy videos on the go.

Philips PET702 Portable DVD Player
DVD player arrived in just a few days in excellent condition. Player is very sturdy, easy to operate with a very good picture. The sound is a little low, but this could have been the dvd.

its okay
its an okay product to have..bought it for my grandaughter to travel with..my only fault with this product is it doesnt stay charged long.. you can plug it into to charge, but not if you have your tomtom pluged in..

Poor battery life
The PET702 total battery life is less than 2.5 hours and it takes about 3 hours to fully recharge it before it can be used again. You cannot play any DVD’s during battery recharging using the included A/C cord or car charger. It has only one headset jack, so sharing the player on an airplane is impossible. For long car trips and hotel stays, you’ll need to play DVDs using your laptop computer and power cord to watch more than one movie. I could have purchased an additional rechargeable DVD player battery to get maybe 3 to 8 hours additional DVD viewing time however, the extra battery would cost between - more and it’s just not worth the trouble.

Awesome dvd player
A+++ We live far away from the city so all of our drives are now quieter with this new purchase! We love it!!!

Phillips 7″ portable dvd player
This product has a great sharp picture. I was somewhat aprehensive but was proved wrong. Get it, charge it, and play it. Easy instructions, great product.

Philips 8.5″ Portable DVD Player
Item came quickly. Packaged well and has all components. Does have a lot of scratches on the cover but the inside looks great. The picture is great but as other people have reviewed on amazon about this item, it is loud when you turn it on and while the dvd gets ready to play and while it’s turning off.

Great DivX player!
This is GREAT DivX player. Phillips seem to be the best at this. Yes it is a little noisy at startup but this is because it is reading COMPRESSED files (DivX format and Mpeg4) and is normal and goes away once the movie starts. I get 6 movies (DivX) on a standard DVD so this is why i choose this player. The battery life is AMAZING and the screen is great. The sound also seems fine to me. I wouldnt buy anything different for my DivX movies. It is also easy to unlock to region-free as i watch a lot of UK movies. Another excellent point is that it will play all my music files (mp3) on a DVD. Be careful as most players will not recognise mp3’s on a DVD only on CD so check before you buy! I had not realised this before. I now have around 100 of my CD’s in mp3 format and record them onto a single DVD so i never have to change the disc on a drive from East coast to West coast!(I work all over USA). I then plug the DVD player into my truck sound system and use the remote to change tracks etc. Great buy!

Loved it but….
I really loved this player however it doesnt play while charging, which isnt a great concern since it has a long battery durability, headphones are not included, not a great concern again since it has the jacks and you can purchase that, what bothered me the most is that IT DOESNT HAVE SKIP PROTECTION!!

Very Good Sturdy Player w/EVERYTHING in Box
Very good DVD player. We couldn’t go anywhere with our 2 kids without it. We did have 2 7-inch (PET724) models crap out eventually over probably 1.5-2 years time, but the kids are rough on them and accidents happen. These are very sturdy, and ours would even get splashed with water from time to time. We upgraded to the 8.5-inch (PET824) this time and it has held up the best so far. The box included EVERYTHING that you would ever need and then some. Everyone who sees our player(s) comment on the high quality construction and the shiny ivory-like exterior surface.

Massive Battery Life
Truly a great product, can be made multi region, is multi voltage, battery lasts 6+ hours (even on a plane), speakers OK.

Only downside is the lack of ability to reverse the screen so as to deny little fingers from presing buttons when the dvd is playing.

This was bought for use on long trips with young children..I am now a little too familiar with the jungle book

No Disk Resume
In general this seems like the perfect portable DVD player. It has a great screen and it looks like a laptop (very sleek). However, it is missing the ONLY feature I look for on a portable DVD player. It does not have disk resume. This means that if you pause a movie and walk away for more than five minutes you have to start the movie from the beginning and fast forward through the chapters to find the place you were at. Also, if you walk away for more than 15 minutes the system completely shuts down and you have to turn it on and restart everything again. Since I am busy and I like to be able to pause what I am watching and come back to it later, this particular product defeats the purpose for having this type of DVD player for me. Therefore, I regrettably have to return the system. [Posted by Spamiclese's wife.]

It just doesn’t get any better than this,
After going thru several Portable DVD/MP3 players, I knew I had to get this portable Philips PET 1030 10.2″ high resolution portable LCD DVD player to compliment my audio visual center, and for the road.

One of my main reasons for selecting this portable over the others in or in excess of its price line was its full support of compressed MPEG4 files and full DVD support of burned MP3 files… The PET 1030 plays almost all Xvid/Divx files with a few exceptions of extremely high resolution definition MPEG4 which were encoded above its chip resolution capability.

Played MPEG4 movies on 4 Gig Corsair Flash Voyager USB2.0 drive and movies played perfectly and without any stuttering, which is sometimes common in other units. Also attached one of my Free Agent 350 Gig external HD’s to the USB 2.0 input and the Philips 1030 played movies perfectly, although I surely would burn out this fine unit if I tried to run the hundreds of MPEG4 movies on the external. Didn’t try to play anything using the SD/MMC memory card slot, or play SVCD’s or VCD’s, External output coaxial and standard jack to TV work well, as does the CAM video input.

All non commercially made MPEG4 subtitles worked flawlessly and were bright and easy to see.

The functional capability of this and future Philips replacement units could pose a major financial headache to Hollywood if future Internet savvy users download more media then they buy commercially. Unit does heat up somewhat after two hours on the right back side as expected, but with only one half of the heat of a laptop with a low heat profile…

To my amazement, this unit plays MPEG2 and MPEG4 right up to the rated 800 (w) x480 (H) x3 if the source media was encoded at higher rates. Unfortunately, I have found other manufacturers to exaggerate or use devious display resolution rating schemes. Tested too many other brand portable DVD players rated at up to 720 or 800 which turned out to be only 480 in display at best in resolution capability.

Up to 32x fast forward and 4x zoom and reverse speed. No carrying case provided, but came with a sturdy plastic travel pouch which will do in a pinch. Came with DC 12V 20A power supply, car mounting kit, car cigarette outlet adapter, s-video cable and AV cable.

Brightness is outstanding. Battery life was over 4 hours. The sound quality for audio CD’s, MP3’s was better than any IPOD I have ever used. Also supports WMA. I tend to burn 40 or 50 hours of MP3’s at 320 bitrate on a single DVD, and this unit plays all my audio files perfectly. It played my 4 and 8 Gig DVD’s filled with MP3’s effortlessly and with outstanding audio fidelity. Supports MP3 ID3V MP3 tagging, and long file name (I think 14 or more characters) and even indicates date MP3 file created, and size of each folder. Philips is truly ahead of any other company in this regard.

Twin Stereo speakers are a bit better than most portables, but if you want outstanding sound quality you should use a good set of earphones. I was even amazed at the quality of Stereo Dolby 2.0 sound from those Xvid/Divx files which were ripped to Dolby.

Commercial DVD’s have sharp and crisp full 720 resolution, and JPEG’s which are high definition are so clear they jump out at you. They can be previewed in thumbs and viewed in full unit resolution. Actually never have seen better MPEG4 or JPG support in most standalone DVD players, including the 3 other Philips I own.

The remote does everything except individual playback at one frame at a time. It will only pause, do A-B repeat, fast forward/backward/next. Zoom is great along with pan. This unit has the most intuitive audio video remote control I have used in the last 7 years. Very easy to switch between 16:9 and 4:3 or reduce or zoom screen size to make non commercial videos fit screen perfectly.

The only thing I can say negative about this unit is that I wish I could buy five or six as gifts for all my friends who are really missing out on what a well engineered full featured portable DVD player is all about.

So so
Bulky, no back light on controls makes it very difficult to navigate in a dark room. Screen resolution is standard fare so it does not look very sharp due to the large size.
Sound is ok. Various inputs ok as well. Memory card reader a plus.
Not as portable as it looks in the picture.

excellent quality for good price
I bought this DVD player recently for my doughter. I find it really cool - large LCD with excellent brightness and contrast, a lot of supported formats - DVD, DivX, MP3. In case of DivX it also supports subtitles (however, it cannot display nation specific characters).
I was also surprised by variety of inputs - you can either play from dvd, SD card, or external USB storage (I haven’t tried this one though).
One more nice feature - it is very easy to get rid of DVD region block - I brought some DVD’s from Europe and I’m able to play them.

Love It
I have used other dvd players and they were ‘ok’. So far I love this one and no problems. The picture is the best I have seen/used, yet. I hate seeing movies on a 21 inch old tv 10 feet away and we can not afford a new large flat screen. I put this on my lap and it is ‘almost’ as good as at the movies. It is the best picture I have seen yet and the sound is great!
I am very happy with it. I also bought the Targus DVD001 13 Portable DVD Player Case. (the case holds it well, pockets for all your things and it holds 20 dvd’s also.) I use ear buds sometimes and between the very good ear buds and the sound, Anything higher the 1 is to loud. I hope to have this, and be happy with it, for a very long time.
